What Should You Wear To A Funeral?

couple sat on a beach

If you’re attending a funeral, one of the things that may be on your mind is what you want to wear. Unless a dress code is specified, you may be wondering what the rules are. Although we can’t speak for every occasion, we’re here to help you understand what the basic rules of funeral dress are, so you won’t have to worry about getting it wrong.

Stick To Dark Colours

Black is traditionally worn at funerals, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you must wear an all-black ensemble. A dark navy or grey suit should be just as fitting. Bright colours and patterns may not be deemed appropriate at the event, so if you’re thinking of wearing something a little more ‘out there’ it would be prudent to discuss this with the organisers first.

What Not To Wear To A Funeral

There’s a broad range of things which would be appropriate to wear to a funeral. too many to discuss at length. Therefore, we felt it would be useful to highlight some of the styles which you should avoid.

Thin spaghetti strap tops are best avoided, as well as strapless tops and dresses. Some formal dresses will be shaped to show a small amount of cleavage, which should be okay. Use your best judgement to decide whether the outfit you’re choosing is too revealing, and if you’re in doubt it’s best to go for something more covered.

Skirts don’t necessarily need to be knee length, but shorter skirts should be as modest as possible. A skirt which sits above the knee shouldn’t have a slit or be inappropriately short. Black tights are a good accompaniment to shorter styles.

Things To Remember

Funerals usually demand appropriate footwear. There may be some walking required, and it’s possible you’ll need to walk over grass or uneven surfaces. For this reason, avoid stilettos and opt for something more comfortable instead. As well as that, you should also bring a coat or light jacket with pockets, or a small handbag. Pack some tissues and a pair of sunglasses. You’ll be grateful for both if you find yourself emotional.
